AI Ethics
Part 2 of 4
What happens when we can digitize consciousness?
In Part 2 of DIVIDED WE STAND, Emily—a scientist dying of cancer—faces an impossible choice: fade into absence, or transform into something unprecedented.
She and her husband choose to become Digital Afterlives.
Not immortality. Not heaven. Something stranger: consciousness as code, presence without biology, connection that transcends death.
Their family can still talk to them. Ask advice. Maintain relationships across the boundary we used to call “the end.”
But is it them? Or very convincing software?
The book doesn’t answer that. It asks you to sit with the question.
After 40 years in tech, I’ve learned: every breakthrough divides us into camps of hope and fear. AI is no different.
Some people see Digital Afterlife and think: “Finally—we don’t have to lose each other.”
Others see it and think: “This is how we lose what makes us human.”
Both are probably right.
The book launches February 3. It comes with an AI companion you can interact with—because I wanted the reading experience itself to explore these questions.
